Helium balloons fly because helium is less dense than air, meaning it is lighter than air. This causes a phenomenon called buoyancy, which pushes the balloon upward.
Inventor of the balloon
The history of balloons began 200 years ago. Balloons as we know them today have their roots in the scientific invention of Michael Faraday in 1824. Faraday, a renowned scientist, was not thinking about parties or celebrations when he created the first rubber balloon.
If you weigh 77 kg, you need about 8,500 balloons to lift you off the ground. If you’re inventing a special flying gift, keep that in mind. A classic latex balloon lifts 9 grams.
Helium, the solar element
During a total solar eclipse in India in 1868, French astronomer Pierre Janssen observed sunlight with a spectroscope. He found the presence of an unknown yellow spectral line that did not correspond to any known element. Independently, the English astronomer Joseph Norman Lockyer made the same discovery and proposed the name “helium”, after the Greek word helios (sun).
Balloons are mostly made of natural latex, which combines quality, stretchability and environmental friendliness. It is obtained from rubber trees (Hevea brasiliensis).

We invite you to visit the Florentina Balloon Land in Citypark in person. A live viewing is best when choosing a balloon for yourself, for someone else, as a gift or to decorate a room. We chat together about colors, motifs, and accessories, provide advice, and resolve ambiguities. Balloons in various color combinations are displayed and inflated with helium.
